首先，要预防低血糖必须勤查血糖。只有多监测血糖才能了解血糖的波动。早餐前血糖低于4.4mmol/L的患者应提防有夜间低血糖可能。增加监测夜间的血糖水平，条件较好的病人可以住院进行24小时动态血糖监测，以发现没有自觉症状的低血糖。只有经常监测血糖才可以发现血糖的高低，从而针对不同的时间血糖的变化采取行之有效的措施。
其次，由于人胰岛素短效制剂作用时间较超短效胰岛素作用时间久、发挥作用较慢，中效制剂又存在潜在的吸收峰值，因而人胰岛素预混制剂的治疗容易在中餐前、夜间发生低血糖而餐后高血糖控制又不尽人意，还有一部分人会因为中效胰岛素发挥作用时间较长和潜在的吸收峰值，容易在夜间凌晨发生低血糖。因此，对于应用预混胰岛素后出现餐后高血糖或夜间低血糖者，及时将预混胰岛素换成预混胰岛素类似物很有必要，因为预混胰岛素类似物的短效制剂作用很快，时间很短，发生低血糖的几率较低。
最后，饮食、运动、获取糖尿病知识、定期监测血糖、规律用药等五驾马车应并驾齐驱，用药应该建立在饮食和运动治疗的基础上。因为饮食和运动是糖尿病治疗的基础，只有基础打牢了，用药才可以安全、有效。因此，如果饮食和运动方案比较合理，一旦出现低血糖，最好是调整用药方案，而不是改变饮食和运动。
